About This Piece

A fine antique French sterling silver timbale or beaker, 18th century. The tulip-shaped cup has a floral motif and beaded frieze on the domed foot, with the initials "MAP" engraved on the foot. A rare and significant piece of French silver from the Revolutionary and Consulate period.

Hallmarks & Provenance

French sterling silver, Paris, 1797–1809. Marked with the standard and guarantee marks for Paris used from 1797–1809, and an eagle’s head countermark applied after the Decree of May 1803. Maker’s punch for Louis Tassin, 1798, with crown and pellet (une couronne et point).
