About This Piece

An antique Amphora bisque pottery vase, Imperial Amphora Works, Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (Austria), c. 1900. The vase features large sprays of roses spilling across the front and wrapping around sweetly detailed putti or cherubs — their child-like faces showing exceptional attention to detail. Both handles are in a basket weave design with gilt wash. The top, middle, and bottom edges of the vase also carry gilt wash, as do most of the roses.

Amphora refers to pottery produced between 1894 and 1904 in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia during the Art Nouveau period — among the most celebrated and collectible of all Art Nouveau ceramics.
