About This Piece
An antique French sterling silver cheese knife with a blade engraved with cows — a whimsical nod to the happy cows who contribute to the production of cheese. The sterling handle is worked in the style of Louis XIV. An unusual and entertaining piece, and a companion to two other cow-engraved cheese knives and a farm scene timbale also available in the shop.
Hallmarks & Provenance
French sterling silver, .950. Maker’s punch for Alphonse Debain — a woodcock (une bécasse) surrounded by the letters A.D., mark registered 19 March 1883, active through 1911. Debain worked at 79 rue du Temple, Paris, following in the business of his father and grandfather, and is known for creating high-quality tableware and tea sets.
