About This Piece
A set of eight fine porcelain dessert plates with demitasse cup insets, retailed by Wilhelm & Graef, Broadway, New York City, c. 1890. White with beautifully raised gilt decoration — a wide gilt border at the edge of the plates and the top of the cups. The cups are demitasse size (not tea cup size), making this a unique and elegant service for dessert with espresso or an after-dinner beverage. The cups could equally serve chocolate mousse or fresh fruit alongside the plates.
Marked for Wilhelm & Graef as retailer; no maker’s marks noted. The firm sold considerable Limoges and the quality of this set is consistent with that tradition.
Provenance
Retailed by Wilhelm & Graef, Broadway, New York City — a well-known shop for fine china, glass, and table settings. Most likely Limoges, France, c. 1890.
