Antique Porcelain Plates, English Landscape Scenes

About This Piece

A set of antique English cabinet plates with hand-painted landscape scenes and pierced work. Each dessert plate with gilt trim features a different scene, making the set a varied and visually rich collection.

The white background features acanthus-style swirls in a warm grayish-green highlighted with gilt. Four different flowers are painted around the edge of each plate in colors that blend harmoniously with the landscape scenes. The plates appear to have been displayed and seldom used.

Decorated in the style of plates by Ridgway and several other well-known makers of the same period. One plate has been signed and two plates bear pattern numbers.

Provenance

English, c. 1860. Decorated in the Ridgway tradition of mid-Victorian cabinet porcelain.

Condition

Very good. Some rubbing to the gilt work and a few small scratches. One plate has a firing flaw (small raised area); two plates have tight hairlines on the reverse side. All in accordance with age and use.
