About This Piece

An exceptionally fine example of Victorian dining elegance, this silver-plated folding biscuit box—historically referred to as a bun warmer—features a beautifully detailed scallop shell design embellished with intricate hand-chased floral and scroll decorations. Crafted by the renowned Fenton Brothers of Sheffield, England, and bearing the authentic Staniforth’s Patent mark, this heirloom piece dates to the late 19th century (circa 1890).

The shell-shaped body rests elegantly on an ornate, naturalistic cast frame stylized to mimic organic tree branches, complete with a decorative carrying handle. Its innovative, patented folding mechanism allows the two main shell panels to swing open gracefully. When parted, it reveals the original, highly desirable hand-pierced interior dividers with stunning gilt-washed covers. Ornate, functional clasps secure the box tightly when closed, making it as impressive mechanically as it is visually.
Originally designed to keep biscuits, scones, or buns warm at the Victorian afternoon tea table, this striking conversation piece serves equally well today as an opulent dining centerpiece, a unique cocktail bar accent, or a premier addition to an antique silver collection.
