About This Piece
A French sterling silver timbale or beaker of tulip form on a round gadrooned pedestal base, created by Louis-Jacques Berger of Paris in the late 18th or early 19th century. The initials "MT" are clearly engraved, with a second set appearing to be "JC" in a fainter hand. A fine collector’s piece in very good condition.
Hallmarks & Provenance
French sterling silver, .950. Marked with the maker’s punch for Louis-Jacques Berger, Paris — known for goblets, timbales, and beakers. His first mark was registered in 1794; his hallmark was re-inscribed in September 1807. Additional marks include:
- Standing rooster with head turned left — Paris guarantee mark for .950 silver, 1798–1809
- Old man in an oval frame with the number 85 — Paris guarantee mark
- Unofficial mark of the Association des Orfèvres, 1795–1797

Condition
