About This Piece
A pair of late Victorian English sterling silver canister-shaped salt and pepper shakers in their original presentation box, hallmarked London 1899. The pair have raised stepped flared bases and finial-shaped tops, with gilt interiors on both base and top. A beautifully complete and giftable set.
Hallmarks & Provenance
English sterling silver, London, 1899. Marked with the Lion Passant for .925 silver, London assay town mark, date letter for 1899, and maker’s mark H over W&Co over Ld in a quatrefoil for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd. The company was founded in the mid-19th century by George Cartwright and acquired by the well-known firm of Adie Brothers Ltd in 1919. Hallmarks appear on both tops and bottoms.
