About This Piece

A fine sterling silver heart-shaped dressing mirror by Black, Starr & Frost, c. 1900. The silver surround is richly decorated with birds, putti, scrollwork, latticework, and acanthus leaves. A large cartouche engraved with initials adorns the top of the mirror. The mirror rests on an easel with a blue velvet back and a light taupe fabric lining to the front.

The design, motifs, and craftsmanship are very similar to dressing mirrors made by William Comyns & Sons of England during the same period — a testament to the transatlantic exchange of decorative arts at the turn of the century.
