About This Piece

A most unusual French shield-shaped armorial plaque with family crest and crown, c. 1875. Crafted from copper with a silver plate overlay — the silver worn in many areas with copper bleeding through, adding considerable charm and character. Small hanging holes on the top of the ribbon, upper shield, and bottom of the shield suggest this was mounted on a carriage, building, or other property belonging to someone of importance. Professionally cleaned; further tarnish could be removed, though the current patina adds to the piece’s authenticity.

Provenance

French, c. 1875. Possibly a carriage, building, or property plaque.
