An antique French silver letter seal for your desk. The seal is beautifully worked with acanthus motifs, Bell-flowers, flowing tendrils of flowers, and a small detail of lattice work.The use of letter seals and wax is a most interesting subject. Etiquette dictated the use and the colors of the wax in the 19th C. Different colors of wax were use in relation to the contents of the letter. I have read that the French used chocolate seals for dinner invitations and white for letters relating to weddings.Perfect for gift giving. Antiques are a perfect way to go green, recycle, and give a piece of the past.

French, late 19th C, the makers punch is very worn. The boar’s head mark for .800 silver is visible.
