About This Piece
antique Christofle silver-plated salt cellar offers a glimpse into Parisian dining history, with roots in the famed Buffet de la Gare de Lyon, later celebrated as Le Train Bleu.
The restaurant’s grand dining room was created for the 1900 Exposition Universelle and shaped by architect Marius Toudoire, whose design refined a railway station restaurant into a destination in its own right. After decades as the Buffet de la Gare de Lyon, it took the name Le Train Bleu in 1963, a tribute to the luxury rail line associated with travel from Paris to the French Riviera.

Provenance
French. The engraved mark “Buffet Gare de Lyon” gives the piece its special character. More than a functional table item, it recalls the Belle Époque atmosphere of elegant rail travel, refined dining, and guests gathering beneath the restaurant’s richly decorated ceilings before continuing their journeys through France.
The Christofle hallmark, in use from 1862 to 1935, places this salt cellar within an important period of the firm’s production. Christofle was widely known for finely made silver and silver-plated wares, supplying distinguished homes, hotels, ships, and restaurants throughout France and beyond.
Surviving pieces connected to the original Buffet de la Gare de Lyon are not often encountered, which makes this example especially appealing to collectors of French hotel silver, railway memorabilia, and Christofle objects.
Displayed in a collection, set on a formal table, or kept as a conversation piece, this salt cellar carries the charm of old Paris and the legacy of one of the world’s most memorable dining rooms.
