About This Piece
A splendid antique English sterling silver christening mug of baluster form, London 1833, William IV period, by Richard William Atkins & William Nathaniel Somersall. Six panels chased with floral and acanthus leaf detail; pedestal base; scroll handle with applied bead detailing and acanthus motif; gilt interior in very good condition. Engraved for a child with the year 1839 on the front, and noted on the underside of the foot that it was a present from her grandfather — a deeply personal and touching provenance. At 168 grams (5.4 troy ounces), a substantial and beautifully made piece.

English sterling silver, .925. Marked with the Lion Passant for sterling, Leopard’s Head for London assay office, date letter "S" for 1833, Monarch’s mark, and maker’s mark RA over WS for Richard William Atkins & William Nathaniel Somersall. Engraved and gifted 1839.
