About This Piece

An antique French silver butter dish, bowl, or tub from the 18th century. The round dish features a vermeil (gold-washed) interior and underside of the lid, a laurel wreath handle, lamb’s tongue-and-dart banding on the flared rim, and a beaded banding on the base. An exceptional collector’s piece of considerable rarity and historical interest.

Hallmarks & Provenance

French, 18th century, with later marks. The lid bears marks for 1793–1794, denoted by the Head of Greek Women with the letter "P" for Paris, and the vieillard (Michel-Ange) mark including the number 1 for .950 silver. The base is marked for Paris (woman’s head), the vieillard mark, and a crab mark. No maker’s mark noted.

The combination of marks may indicate the piece was in production during the earlier period (1793–94) and completed and marked later, or that the vieillard marks were applied at a subsequent date to verify the silver content — a fascinating hallmarking history.

Condition

Very good. Some loss to the gold wash; one dimple on the side; one small discreet repair to the silver bowl (visible in photo 3, small spot on the left side just above the hallmark on the foot). All in accordance with age and use.
