An antique French silver letter seal, beautifully worked with acanthus motifs, bell-flowers, flowing tendrils, and a small detail of latticework. A most elegant desk accessory and a perfect gift.
The use of letter seals and wax is a fascinating subject steeped in 19th-century etiquette. Different colors of wax were used in relation to the contents of the letter — the French, for instance, used chocolate-colored wax for dinner invitations and white for wedding correspondence. A charming piece of social history for the desk.
